An audio recording has surfaced in which a ward-level president of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Tongi is allegedly heard demanding extortion money and declaring, “This is my road. Even if Tarique Rahman comes here, no work will be done.”
Following the incident, Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Dal expelled Ratul Sikder Ami, the Chhatra Dal leader in question.
Meanwhile, the victim, garment workers’ union leader Md Mazharul Islam, filed a complaint at Tongi West Police Station on Tuesday night, which has been registered as a case.
According to sources, Mazharul, office secretary of the Bangladesh Garments Workers Trade Union Federation, operates an office in the Sataish area of Tongi near Ami’s house. Ami, president of the 51st ward unit of Chhatra Dal, along with associates, allegedly abducted, assaulted, and extorted money from him multiple times, both in person and through mobile banking services.
The case statement says Ami recently called Mazharul and threatened him while demanding Tk 8,000.
Mazharul said, “I had no other option but to file a complaint with the police.”
Attempts to contact Ami were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off.
Officer-in-Charge Md Arifur Rahman of Tongi West Police Station confirmed receiving the complaint.
Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Dal also expelled Kawsar Ahmed, general secretary of the 41st ward Chhatra Dal, after a video surfaced showing him allegedly abusing drugs in public.
Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Dal President Rohanuzzaman Shukkur confirmed the expulsions.
