The BNP paid tribute to the martyred intellectuals of the 1971 Liberation War by placing a wreath at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur, Dhaka, this morning.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, accompanied by senior party leaders, laid the wreath at 9:15am and observed a moment of silence to honour the national heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Speaking to reporters at the memorial, Fakhrul reflected on the intellectuals’ sacrifices during the Liberation War and called for unity to build a democratic and self-reliant Bangladesh in line with their dreams.
To commemorate the day, the BNP lowered the national flag to half-mast and hoisted black flags at its offices nationwide, including the central office in Nayapaltan.
Additionally, the party organised a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh yesterday to observe the solemn occasion.
Martyred Intellectuals’ Day holds profound significance in Bangladesh’s history. On December 14, 1971, just two days before the country’s victory in the Liberation War, prominent academics, doctors, engineers, journalists, artists, teachers, and other intellectuals were abducted from their homes.
Blindfolded and taken to unknown locations, they were subjected to brutal torture and executed. Their bodies were later dumped in mass killing sites, including Rayerbazar and Mirpur.
