Derogatory remarks against PM: BNP leader jailed for 3yrs
A Chattogram court today sentenced Vice-Chairman of BNP’s central Committee Gias Uddin Quader Chowdhury to three years’ imprisonment in a case filed for issuing death threat to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and making derogatory comments against her.
The court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahidullah Kaisar also fined the BNP leader Tk 5,000 in default of which he has to suffer three more months in jail, said Additional Public Prosecutor advocate Shamir Das Gupta.
The court found him “guilty beyond doubt” after verifying all the records and evidence, said advocate Shamir Das Gupta.
Convict Gias Quader is on the run after coming out of jail on High Court bail in the case, added the lawyer.
The Additional Public Prosecutor said six witnesses testified in the case during the trial.
Gias Quader Chowdhury is the brother of former BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury who was hanged for his crime against humanity.
Fatickchari upazila Awami League (AL) General Secretary Nazim Uddin filed the case with a court accusing the BNP leader on May 31 last year after he made the issued death threat to the PM and made derogatory comments against her while addressing an Iftar Mahfil organised by local BNP on May 29 last year.
After the incident, four other cases were lodged against the BNP leader.
