Title-aspirants Dhaka Dynamites got off to a flying start in the Bangladesh Premier League when they thrashed Rajshahi Kings by 83 runs in their opening match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.
Young Afghan opener Hazratullah Zazai set up the win plundering 78 off 41 balls, the first half-century in the sixth edition of the tournament before a disciplined effort by Dhaka bowlers completed the rout.
Zazai and two little cameos from Sunil Narine (38 off 28 balls) and Shuvagata Hom (38 off 14 balls) powered Dhaka to 189-5 and bowlers complemented nicely to bowl out Rajshahi for 106 in 18.2 overs.
Rubel Hossain led Dhaka attack by picking up three wickets for only seven runs while fellow pacer Mohor Sheikh grabbed 2-24.
Sent into bat first Zazai, one of the three batsmen in history to hit six sixes in one over in Twenty20s, and Narine gave Dhaka a solid start when they shared 116 runs in opening stand in little over 10 overs.
Mohammad Hafeez broke the stand by removing Narine before skipper Mehedi Hasan ended the onslaught of Zazai, who clobbered four fours and seven sixes in his swashbuckling innings.
Zazai put Mehedi to his sword hitting the off-spinner for three sixes in his second over to race to his half-century off just 22 balls.
Wicketkeeper Zakir Hasan dropped Zazai on 50 off Hafeez and the left-hander made them pay immediately by smashing compatriot Qais Ahmad for three sixes in the next over.
Hafeez saved Rajshahi from more embarrassment as Soumya Sarkar took the catch at long-on but Dhaka suffered an unexpected collapse after Zazai’s dismissal as they lost four wickets for 12 runs to lose their way.
Hom took 17 runs from the 18th over of the innings bowled by Arafat Sunny before he struck Alauddin Babu for three fours and a six in the final over of the innings to give Dhaka a challenging score.
Chasing a daunting target, Rajshahi got off to a positive start when Hafeez hit pacer Mohor Sheikh for three fours in the second over but they soon started stuttering once Sakib al Hasan removed his fellow opener Mominul Haque for eight in the next over.
Andre Russell then dismissed Soumya Sarkar for four and Englishman Laurie Evans was run out for 10, putting Rajshahi on the back-foot.
The game ended as a contest when Rubel took two wickets in three balls in his second over, including the one of Hafeez, who made highest 29 runs for Rajshahi facing 28 deliveries.
Hom took the final wicket by dismissing last man Sunny for 18 and fittingly man-of-the-match Zazai took the catch at long on to bring the curtain down to an agonisingly one-sided match.
