The Border Guard Bangladesh director general, Major General Abul Hossain, on Sunday warned that a tough reply would be given to Myanmar if any bullet from their side hits Bangladesh territory.
‘No foreigners’ den will be allowed on Bangladesh land and we are ready to face any kind of situation along the frontier areas,’ Abul Hossain said at a press briefing after visiting the Myanmar-Bangladesh border area along Ghumdhum BGB border out-post.
Additional forces have been deployed along the 271-km border with Myanmar to prevent fresh influx of Rohingyas, he said.
‘We are the nation of heroes. We will give a befitting reply if any threat comes even through a single inch of our land,’ the BGB DG said following firings twice by Myanmar troops on fleeing people near Bandarban border on Saturday.
He said the situation in Rakhine State of Myanmar would be improved if the final recommendations made by the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State (Annan Commission) were implemented.
As per their knowledge, the BGB DG said, there had been no influx from Myanmar to Bangladesh.
Quoting local people, UNB Cox’s Bazar correspondent said that around 4,000-5,000 new Rohingyas reached Bangladesh over the last couple of days though the local administration said that they were not allowing any Myanmar nationals into Bangladesh.
The foreign ministry on Saturday summoned the Myanmar envoy in Dhaka and expressed ‘serious concern’ over the recent happenings, including the fresh entry of Myanmar nationals into Bangladesh.
Thousands of unarmed civilians, including women, children and elderly people from the Rakhine State, have assembled close to the border and are making attempts to enter Bangladesh, said the foreign ministry.
Bangladesh recalled the influx of Myanmar nationals into Bangladesh due to similar military operations in the aftermath of terrorist attacks on October 9 last year that resulted in about 87,000 (till July 31, 2017) civilians crossing over to Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has expressed ‘serious concern’ at the possibility of recurrence of such a situation as it already hosts about four hundred thousand of Myanmar nationals, said a foreign ministry statement.
On Saturday, the government directed the local administration to employ its best efforts to restrict the entry of fresh Rohingyas into the country saying not a single person will be allowed in the name of ‘humanity’.
At least 89 people were killed as militants besieged border posts in northern Rakhine State of Myanmar on Friday. The attack triggered a fresh influx of refugees towards Bangladesh.
A total of 12 security officials had been killed alongside 77 ‘militants’, Myanmar authorities said.
