Police on Thursday arrested a man in connection with torturing a nine-year old girl in Gazipur.
The man, Omar Faruq, was arrested by a joint team of Joydebpur and Chandpur policemen from Gazipur’s West Burulia after a case was filed against him and his wife Moni Begum over torturing their nine-year old house help.
Chandpur police superintendent Shamsunnahar told Prothom Alo that Moni Begum fled away sensing the police raid.
Joydebpur police station officer-in-charge Khandakar Rezaul Hasan said, “The case has been filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.”
The victim is now taking treatment in Chandpur Sadar Hospital, the OC added.
She was first admitted to Haimchar Health Complex with marks of wounds on her body.
According to Haimchar police, the victim’s mother Firoza Begum fell in trouble with her five children as her husband abandoned them.
Taking advantage of the situation, a person named Mustafa Sardar took the victim to Gazipur where she started working as a domestic help at the house of Omar Faruq and Moni Begum.
Omar Faruq works at Dhaka airport and Moni Begum is a school teacher.
The couple allegedly tortured the minor brutally when she wanted to go to her village in Haimchar.
After learning about the torture, Mustafa Sardar brought the minor back to Haimchar.
Local people, then, admitted the minor to the Haimchar Health Complex and handed Mustafa Sardar to the police.
