Over 80 people were killed and 80 injured in a gas cylinder explosion at a restaurant near Jhabua of Indian state of Madhya Pradesh today.
The two-storey building housing the restaurant collapsed due to the explosion. Officials suspect many people could still be trapped under the debris, reports NDTV.
The explosion at Sethiya Restaurant, situated in a residential area near a bus stand in Petlawad town, over 300 kms from the state capital, happened around 9 this morning.
According to senior police officials, gelatine sticks used for mining stored in a house next to the restaurant caused the huge impact. Reports suggest many adjacent buildings suffered damages.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has ordered a probe into the incident and announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.
Rescue operations are underway at the site where locals are helping officials.
