Police detained eight leaders and activists of different left-leaning parties in the capital’s Mirpur Wednesday afternoon when they tried to bring out a procession.
The detention came four days into an “unofficial ban” on political meetings and rallies across the country for a month since May 19.
Ganatantrik Bam Morcha, a platform of left-leaning parties, was scheduled to hold a rally at Mirpur-10 to realise their 10-point demand over collapse of nine-storey RanaPlaza in Savar that killed at least 1,127 people.
“Police arrested me along with 15 other leaders and activists when we brought out a procession at Mirpur-10 after holding a rally,” Junayed Saki, chief coordinator of Gono Sanghoti Andolon, who is now at Mirpur police custody told The Daily Star over cell phone.
Imtiaz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Mirpur division) however claimed of arresting eight people.
The detainees were later released around 7:30pm after receiving undertaking.
