Court fines accused Tk10,000 with an extra six months jail in default
Cyber Crime (Bangladesh) Tribunal has awarded seven years imprisonment to a person accused of disseminating a derogatory song on father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Cyber Tribunal Judge AKM Shamsul Alam pronounced the verdict on Wednesday.
The accused is Tanmoy Mollik, 24, of Gorkathi village under Dacope upazila of Khulna.
The court also fined Tanmoy Tk10,000 with an extra six months jail in default.
The court’s Additional Public Prosecutor Nazrul Islam Shamim told the Dhaka Tribune that the judge gave seven years imprisonment under penal code of article 57 of ICT law.
According to the case details, Rafiq, a shop owner at Gorakathi market, was playing a song slurring Bangabandhu and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in his computer.
Sub-Inspector Joynal Abedin under Dacope police station arrested Rafiq immediately after hearing the song.
During interrogation, Rafiq told police that Tanmoy Mollik gave him the song through a memory card.
Tanmoy used to earn money by transferring songs, videos through memory cards, pen drives and other portable devices.
On October 26, 2013, police arrested Tanmoy and produced him with Rafiq before the Khulna court.
The court ordered the police to place a charge sheet in this connection.
On May 19, police placed a charge sheet.
Later, Khulna court sent the case to the Cyber Tribunal.
