A Gazipur court has sentenced six people to death and three others to life in jail for the murder of a teenage boy 15 years ago in the district’s Kapasia Upazila.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan delivered the verdict on Tuesday in presence of all the convicts, officials said.
Those who will walk the gallows are Rafiqul Islam, Atiqul Islam alias Atiq Sheikh, Selim Sheikh, Nayan Sheikh, Anwar Hossain alias ‘Anar’ and Alam Sheikh.
Those to spend the rest of their lives behind bars are Abdul Motaleb, his wife Anwara Begum, who is also a Ghaguta Union Council member, and her brother Sheikh Shamsuddin.
The court has also fined all of them Tk 10,000 each.
According to case details, 10th grader Sanaullah was romancing the daughter of one of the convicts. That issue along with an old family feud had kept Sanaullah’s family and the family of the convicts at loggerheads.
On Feb 9, 2001, the convicts attacked and strangulated the teenager to death when he was on his way to Manahardi’s Narandi from his Ghagutia home.
His body was found, with a muffler wrapped around his neck, the next morning inside a classroom at Singua Fakir Sahab Uddin Boys’ High School.
Later that day, Sanaullah’s brother Asaduzzaman lodged the murder case against 12 people with Kapasia police, court police’s Inspector Md Rabiul Islam said.
He said police submitted the chargesheet against the 12 on Aug 31 that year.
