6 killed, 330 hurt in clashes in dists

 

Six people were killed and many more injured as BNP-Jamaat activists clashed with law enforcers and Awami League men in several districts on Friday.

 

In Chandpur, three BNP activists were killed and over 50 people injured, seven with bullets, in a triangular clash among BNP and Awami League men and cops in Faridganj upazila headquarters on Friday afternoon.

 

The deceased were identified as Jahangir, 35, Gazipur union Jubo Dal president, Mohammad Arif, 28, a Jubo Dal activist, and Sharif, 22, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal man.

 

Witnesses said BNP leaders and activists brought out a procession from T&T area of the upazila headquarters around 4pm.

 

As the procession reached VeterinaryHospital, police and Awami League activists attacked it, triggering a triangular clash.

 

At one stage, police opened fire on the BNP men, leaving Arif dead on the spot and over 50 others injured.

 

The law enforcers fired over 200 rounds of rubber bullets and teargas shells during the clash.

 

Six of the injured were rushed to ChandpurSadarHospital while the rest to other hospitals and clinics.

 

Of the injured, bullet-hit Jahangir died at the SadarHospital while Sharif succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dhaka from the hospital.

 

In Cox’s Bazar, two people were shot to death and many injured in a clash between BNP activists and law enforcers in Chakaria upazila headquarters in the afternoon.

 

The deceased were identified as Badsha Miah, 23, a tea shop owner, and Mizanur Rahman, a BNP activist.

 

Officer-in-charge of Chakaria Police Station Ranjit Kumar Barua said BNP men tried to gather in Chiringa Bus Stand area to hold a rally after Juma prayers defying Section 144.

 

As police and members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) tried to prevent the BNP activists, they attacked the law enforcers, triggering a clash.

 

At one stage, the law enforcers opened fire on the unruly BNP men, leaving Badsha and Mizanur dead on the spot and many more injured.

 

The local administration imposed restriction on holding rallies and processions in the area following counter programmes announced by both Awami League and BNP at the same venue.

 

The OC said Awami League activists also tried to gather in the area in the morning, but police dispersed them.

 

In Nilphamari, a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami man was killed in a clash with police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) men in Jaldhaka upazila in the afternoon.

 

The deceased was identified as Moslem Uddin, 32.

 

Witnesses said the activists of Jamaat and its associate body Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession in the Petrol Pump area around 3:30pm as part of its central programme.

 

As police tried to resist them, the Jamaat-Shibir men engaged in a clash with the law enforcers.

 

Police and Rab fired over 100 rounds of teargas shells and seven rubber bullets during the melee that left 30 people injured.

 

The injured were rushed to different hospitals. Of them, Moslem succumbed to his injuries at RangpurMedicalCollegeHospital.

 

The condition of two others was stated to be critical at the hospital.

 

In Noakhali, over 50 people were injured in a clash between the activists of 18-party alliance and 14-party alliance and police in district town.

 

During the clash, local AL office and several business establishments were also vandalised and torched.

 

Police fired over 1000 rounds of rubber bullets and teargas canisters to bring the situation under control.

 

They also arrested 19 people from the spot.

 

In Chittagong, 12 people were injured as police charged baton on them to disperse during a clash between activists of 18-party alliance and Awami League in Chandgaon area of the port city in the afternoon.

 

On the other hand, eight BNP activists were injured as the ruling party men hurled brick chips at them at Lalkhan Bazar intersection.

 

Later, the unruly BNP activists vandalised some shops and torched a motorcycle of police.

 

In Comilla, 50 people, including seven policemen, were injured in a clash between activists of BNP and AL at Monaharganj upazila headquarters in the afternoon.

 

Officer-in-charge (investigation) of Monaharganj Police Station Sadek Hossain said the clash ensued while BNP activists were returning from a rally.

 

During the clash, local AL office and 20 shops were vandalised and four motorcycles were torched.

 

Later, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

 

In Brahmanbaria, 20 people were injured in a clash between activists of BNP and AL in Puratan Bazar area of Kasba upazila in the afternoon.

 

During the clash, several shops were also vandalized.

 

In Mymensingh, 20 people were injured as BNP-Jamaat activists locked in a clash with police after being resisted in Natunbazar area of the district town in the afternoon.

 

During the clash, the activists hurled some crude bombs at police.

 

Five people were arrested from the spot.

 

In Laxmipur, 30 people were injured, seven with bullets, in a clash between activists of BNP and Awami League and police in Satarpara area of Ramganj upazila.

 

During the clash, 15 people were arrested from the spot.

 

In Panchagarh, eight people were injured in a clash between the activists of 18-party alliance and law enforcers in Atoari headquarters area in the afternoon as police tried to disperse a procession of the alliance by firing rubber bullets and teargas canisters.

 

Officer-in-charge of Atoari Police Station Shohrab Ali said police arrested seven opposition activists from the spot.

 

In Gazipur, 10 people were injured in a triangular clash among activists of BNP and AL and police in Mukta Mancha area in Sreepur upazila in the afternoon.

 

Sources said both parties called rallies in the area and the clash ensued as BNP activists approached the area where AL men had earlier taken position to hold their rally.

 

Later, police dispersed the activists of the both parties by firing teargas canisters and charging batons from the spot, which left 10 people from both sides injured.

 

In Netrakona, BNP activists brought out a procession from Parla Bus Stand area of Sadar upazila around 3pm and vandalised three Mymensingh-bound buses on Dhaka-Netrakona highway.

 

In Kalmakanda upazila, BNP activists brought out a procession in Moddabazar area in the afternoon and police dispersed them by charging batons, leaving 30 people injured.

 

During the clash, 10 activists were arrested from the spot.

 

In Shariatpur, three people were injured as activists of BCL and Jubo League, associate bodies of the ruling party, attacked a procession of BNP activists in the district town around 11am.

 

On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

 

In Satkhira, activists of 18-party alliance brought out a procession from Abaderhat Bazar area of sadar upazila around 11am and vandalised a medicine shop and torched jute godown of a local leader of the ruling party.

 

Later, police dispersed the unruly activists from the spot.

 

In Pabna, 20 people, two with bullets, were injured as police charged batons to disperse the activists of 18-party alliance and the ruling party in Iswardi upazila in the afternoon.
