The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained four persons in connection with BNP leader Rafiqul Islam Majumder’s murder.
Those detained have been identified as Majumder’s mother-in-law Lipi Akter, Md Ali Mohabbat, 36, Fazlur Rahman, 53, and Mizanur Rahman Montu, 41.
RAB’s legal and media wing director KTM Habibur Rahman said the five had been nabbed from Dhaka and Gazipur on Tuesday seven months after the murder.
Rahman said Lipi Akter had hired the toughs to kill her son-in-law.
“Lipi said her younger daughter’s husband Rafiqul had threatened her because he had an illicit relation with her,” the RAB official said at Wednesday’s briefing.
“So she hired the killers with Tk 200,000,” he said.Majumder, General Secretary Dhaka BNP’s ward number 56 unit, was abducted form Jhenaidah’s Shailkupa on Jan 5.
His handcuffed body was recovered from Kushtia’s Kumarkhali on the same night.
Lipi had reportedly told RAB that she had paid off Mohabbat.
RAB official Rahman said one of the detainees Fazlur Rahman was a retired policeman who had served in RAB. After Majumder’s abduction, rumours were spread that RAB had picked him up.
