At least four female workers were killed as a devastating fire broke out at a garment factory at Dhaka Export Processing Zone (DEPZ) in Savar Saturday evening.
Harunur Rashid, assistant manager of Women and Children Health Centre in Jamgara in Ashulia, told The Daily Star that they received four bodies of females aged between 20 and 28.
At least 45 others were rushed to the hospital for treatment, he said, adding 10 of them are being referred to different hospitals in Dhaka as they were in critical condition.
The hospital official said most of the victims — both deceased and injured — suffered injuries after jumping on the ground from different floors of the eight-storey factory building.
Fire service officials said the fire originated on the ground floor of Tajnin Fashion at Nishchintapur around 7:00pm and spread up to fourth floor of the building.
The officials said they brought down many of the workers trapped on the rooftop of the building.
Nine fire fighting units from Dhaka, Gazipur, Savar and Dhamrai were trying to douse the fire when the report was filed around 9:45pm.
