A total of 36 out of 48 candidates who contested in five constituencies of Narayanganj in the 13th parliamentary election have forfeited their security deposits after failing to secure at least 12.5 percent of the valid votes cast, according to unofficial results.
Among those who lost their deposits are five rebel candidates from the BNP, including two former lawmakers and a former state minister.
The information emerged from an analysis of unofficial constituency-wise results. Many of the candidates who forfeited their deposits failed to cross even the 1,000-vote mark.
Narayanganj District Election Officer Alomgir Hossain said candidates submitted a fixed amount of money as a security deposit while filing nomination papers. The money is refunded only if contenders secure at least 12.5 percent of the valid votes.
