At least 32 people were killed and several injured in lightning strikes in eleven districts on Thursday.
According to Prothom Alo correspondents at the respective districts, five people each were killed in Rajshahi, Sirajganj and Pabna, four in Kishoreganj, three in Brahmanbaria, two each in Gazipur, Bogra, Dhaka’s Jatrabari and Natore, and one each in Pirojpur and Netrokona.
In the capital Dhaka, two young men were killed by lightning in Jatrabari.
Another five were injured in the same incident on Thursday afternoon, said witnesses.
Of the deceased, Mohammad Noman Hasan, 22, was a student of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, and Shahed Sohag, 24, was a student of Ahsanullah University.
Jatrabari police station officer-in-charge Anisur Rahman confirmed the deaths to Prothom Alo.
Rajshahi: Five people were killed and four others injured by lightning strike in Rajshahi’s Mohonpur upazila.
Abdur Razzak, 28, son of Shamsuddin of Ata Narayanpur village, Abdul Aziz, 50 of Hattoir village and Sri Soito Chandra, 30 of Dangapara village died on the spot when a thunderbolt struck them during a storm around 1:30pm, said Abdus Samad, chairman of Mohonpur upazila.
The two other victims are Laili Begum, 40, of Godagari upazila and Morzina Begum, 50, of Durgapur upazila of the district.
The injured were Jalal Uddin, 40, of Pullakuri village, Alimon Begum, 70 of Baroipara village and Jahanara Begum, 28, of Mollah Dying village of the union.
Meanwhile, another woman was injured by lightning strike at Dhaminpur village in Baghmara upazila.
The injured were admitted to different hospitals in the district.
Pabna: Five people were killed and four injured in Pabna in two separate lighting strikes.
The deceased are Moin Uddin, 70, of Sujanagar upazila, his granddaughter Shikha Khatun, 12, and Shahid Hossain, 50, Fazlur Rahman, 40, and Chhakir Uddin, 70, of Chatmohor upazila, said officer-in-charge of Chatmohor police station Mallik Bain.
Pirojpur: Yunus Sikdar, 50, was killed in lightning at Barharzi village in Mothbaria upazila in the district. Ayesha Begum, 40, suffered burn injuries during the lightning.
Brahmanbaria: Three people were killed in lightning on Thursday noon in Bancharampur upazila in the district, according to the Bancharampur police station officer-in-charge, Angshu Kumar Deb.
The deceased are Shafiqul Islam of Charshibpur village, Shamsul Islam of Isapur village and Kanainagar village.
Gazipur: Two people were killed in the district’s Kapasia upazila. The deceased are: Sattar Ali, 26, of Kurigram district, and Rubina, 40, of Khirati village of the Kapasia upazila.
Police sub inspector Mohammad Shahjahan said Sattar was harvesting paddy in Kapasia’s Uttarkhan village when he was killed in lightning.
Housewife Rubin was killed in lightning when she was returning home with her cows from the field.
Netrokhona: One Roisuddin, 50, of Ashuzia unon under Kendua upazila in the district was killed in lightning.
Ashuzia union council chairman Mohammad Rafiqul Islam confirmed the death.
Kishoreganj: In Kishoreganj, four people were killed as the thunderbolt struck them during rain.
The deceased were identified as Shariful Islam Shuvo, 18, a 1st year student of Hossainpur Degree College, Mamata Begum, 40, of Ishapshar village in Tarail upazila, Rojia Khatun, 56, of Koikuri village of Bajitpur upazila, and Swapan, 17, son of Manjil Miah, of Baher Nagar village.
Natore: Two people were killed and two others were injured in lightning in four places in Lalpur upazila in the district.
Lalpur police station officer-in-charge Abdul Hye Talukder said Mobarak Hossain, 24, of Raghunathpur village and Sahara Banu of Uttar Lalpur village were killed while gathering mangoes fallen from the trees in the thunderstorm.
Bogra: Two persons were killed in an incident of lightning strike in Bogra’s Sherpur.
The deceased are Anwar Hossain, 40, of Betgari village and Sakhina Khatun, 55, of Betkhoi village, said Shimabari union parishad chairman Aftab Uddin Talukder.
Sirajganj: The thunderbolt killed five people, including a woman and a minor child, in Ullapara and Raiganj upazilas of Sirajganj.
The deceased were identified as Abdul Latif, 30, of Simla village, Shahinur, 26, of Betua village in Ullapara; Nupur, 8, Motaleb, 42, of Chakpur village, and Anwar Hossain, 35, a mardasah teacher and resident of Bejgati village in Raiganj upazila.
