3 Tazreen staff remanded for 5 days

A Dhaka court on Wednesday allowed police to quiz for five days in custody the three staff of Tazreen Fashions arrested on Tuesday night.

Police said the arrests were made following allegations that authorities stopped workers from running to safety after fire had broken out at the factory at Nischintapur, Ashulia on Saturday night, killing at least 110 people.

Ashulia Police Station’s Inpector Mostafa Kamal, who is probing the incident, sought seven days of remand for each of the arrestees, but the Senior Chief Judicial Magistrate of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s court Wasim Sheikh granted five days to grill them.

The arrestees are Tazreen’s Administrative Officer Dulal Uddin, Store in-Charge Hamidul Islam Lavlu and Security in-Charge Al Amin.

Ashulia Police Station’s Sub Inspector Md Kamrul Islam filed the case against unnamed accused for the death and injuries the workers suffered due to fire.

The three were shown arrested in the case.

In his prayer for remand, the police officer said the workers could not get out of the factory when the fire broke out as the RMG unit officers did not come to help in time.

‘Negligence’ of the accused lead to the deaths of the workers, said the remand prayer.

The accused claimed their innocence saying they could have died as well.
