Detectives have arrested three Hifazat-e Islam leaders in Dhaka’s Mirpur on charges of unleashing violence in its May 5 rally in Motijheel.
They are Khatib of the Lalbagh Shahi Mosque and also the Principal of Jamia Arabia Khademul Islami Madrasa Emran Majari, Vice Principal of the madrasa Mizanur Rahman and Principal of Mirpur Jamiul Ulum Madrasa Abul Bashar.
Police said all of the arrestees are leaders of the Chittagong-based organisation which is believed to be backed by Jamaat-e-Islami.
DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman said,” The three are accused in two cases filed over the mayhem unleashed in Motijheel in the name of the May 5 rally.”
“Legal action is being taken against them,” he added.
The supports o Hifazat unleashed a wave of violence in Paltan, Baitul Mukarram, Gulistan and Motijheel from the post Dhaka-seige rally.
The law enforcers had to evic them from the Shapla Chattar, the rally venue, in a pre-dawn drive in the early hours of the next day as they continued to stage a sit-in there way beyond the time granted.
The organisation’s Secretary General Junaid Babu Nagari was detained in Dhaka the next day while its chief Ahmed Shafi returned to Chittagong to avoid arrest.
