Pirates kidnapped 28 fishermen along with their trawler in the Bay of Bengal at Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar early Thursday, United News of Bangladesh reports.
The abducted fishermen hailed from Kutubdia upazila.
Jainal Abedin, owner of the looted trawler, FB Jainal, said some 30 fishermen sailed in the Bay to catch fish with his trawler five days ago.
He said a gang of bandits, numbering 20 to 25, swooped on the trawler around 4:00am while the fishermen were netting fish at Sonadia.
Two fishermen – Shahabuddin Badsha and Biman Ananda Das – jumped off the trawler and managed to swim ashore.
Later, the duo informed Jainal of the incident over phone in the morning.
The gangsters fled into the deep sea taking them hostages along with the trawler.
The trawler owner said he was on the way to Maheshkhali to seek police help in this regard.
