At least 20 people, including three policemen, were injured as Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) men clashed with police and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Comilla University on Saturday.
Police and witnesses said the clash broke out when BCL activists, led by its university unit convener Mahmudur Rahman Masum, attacked the procession brought out by JCD activists for welcoming the freshers during the admission test of honours first year of the university in the afternoon.
At one stage, both groups attacked each other, leaving 17 people injured on both sides.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control firing shots.
Three cops were also injured when both groups hurled brick chips at each other.
Later, BCL activists attacked the two matches controlled by JCD activists in Salmanpur area near the university campus and vandalised its some furniture, said Nurul Alam Chowdhury Noman, coordinator of the university unit of JCD.
University unit BCL joint convener Al Amin Arnab said the clash erupted as JCD men were chanting provocative slogans during their fresher reception programme that left 7-8 BCL activists injured.
Assistant police super (sadar circle) M Jahangir Alam said three vehicles carrying policemen were vandalised during the clash.
Additional police were deployed on the campus and in its nearby areas to avert any trouble, Jahangir Alam said.
