Two policemen have been arrested for the alleged kidnapping of an NGO official and extortion in Kurigram.
Maidul Islam, 40, was abducted on Wednesday evening.
His younger brother ‘Liton’ filed an extortion case with the Kurigram Sadar Police on Thursday, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Gafur, investigating the case.
Four men, including three policemen and a source of the detective police, have been accused in the case.
“A court has sent detective police Constable Atiquzzaman, Constable Mamunur Rashid working at the Kurigram Court, and Monu Maker (the DB police source) to jail,” SI Gafur said.
Another policeman accused in the case, Constable Shah Alam, is absconding.
Kurigram Sadar police OC Abdul Baten Mia, however, claimed two policemen had been detained for “violation of discipline”.
Police claimed it was a simple case of extortion but the victim’s younger brother said he had been made to sign the case details prepared by police.
“It’s a simple case of extortion which was foiled by police,” said the OC.
The victim’s brother Liton, a student of Kurigram Government College, said Maidul went to College Parha to meet him at a student hostel.
Quoting his brother, Liton said Maidul was abducted on his way home. He was confined to a house at Mogholbasa.
The kidnappers then called on Liton’s mobile phone asking for money.
Liton sent Tk 10,000 to a mobile number.
SI Gafur said police sprung to action after Liton filed a case in connection with the incident.
He described how they nabbed the extortionists.
A team, led by Gafur, raided the shop of Monu Maker on Wednesday midnight when the suspected kidnappers were sharing the extortion money among themselves.
Constable Shah Alam fled the scene.
Maidul’s relatives said he returned home around 2am on Thursday after his release.
