Three clashes in as many villages in Brahmanbaria district on Friday left two dead and around 100 injured.
Police said two people were killed and over 50 others injured when two groups clashed at Sadekpur village at Brahmanbaria’s Sadar Upazila.
Sadar Police Station’s Sub Inspector Atiqur Rahman said the casualties were inflicted when supporters of the current and former chairmen of the Union Parishad clashed in two phases — in the morning and afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Mohammad Ismail Hossain, 45, son of Sobhan Mia, and Shamsul Islam, son of Muslim Mia.
Ismail was loyal to the incumbent Chairman Iqbal Hossain, while Shamsul was a supporter of former Chairman Abdul Hai.
Two of the critically injured – Habib Mia and Munir Hossain – were sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital as their conditions deteriorated. The rest of the injured have been admitted at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital.
Police and eyewitnesses said the first clash started around 10am when at least 500 people from two groups engaged in a turf war.
Police soon rushed to the spot and dispersed the mob by lobbing teargas shells and firing rubber bullets and brought the situation under control.
But the two groups clashed again around 3pm. Ismail and Shamsul were killed with sharp weapons.
SI Atiqur Rahman said the situation there was calm now following the deployment of additional police forces.
Meanwhile, at least 15 people were injured in another clash between two groups at Jahangirparha under Sarail Upazila’s Kalikaccha Union in Brahmanbaria.
Sarail Police Station SI Uttam Chakrabarty told bdnews24.com the clash erupted around 10am Friday following a minor incident. At least 10 houses were vandalised and looted at that time.
In another clash at Bihair village in the Bahmanbaria district town, nearly 30 people were injured when two influential clans clashed for at least five hours starting from 6am.
At least 30 houses and shops were vandalised and looted during the mayhem, said Sadar police SI Atiqur Rahman.
