18-party to stage countrywide protest rallies Thursday

 

The BNP-led 18-party alliance will stage countrywide rallies on Thursday protesting the killings and arrests of opposition leaders and activists and repression on them allegedly by the law enforcers and ruling party “cadres”.

 

Addressing a press briefing at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office on the 18-party’s 60-hour hartal that ended at 6pm on Tuesday, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the programme.

 

He said the rallies will be held in all cities, district towns and upazila headquarters allover the country to lodge the opposition’s protest against those 18-party’s leaders and activists killed and injured in police firings and attacks by ruling party “cadres” since October 25 to October 29, 2013 and those arrested and punished by mobile courts during the period.

 

The BNP spokesman said they want to hold their protest rally in the capital in front of their Nayapaltan central office and they have already sought permission for it from the Dhaka Metropolitan authorities.

 

Fakhrul claimed that 18 opposition leaders and activists were killed and 7,052 injured by law enforcers and ruling party “cadres”, while 230 arrested and 41 punished by mobile courts since October 25.

 

Besides, he said, the 18-party will arrange gayebana janazas in all cities, district towns and upazila headquarters on Friday after Jum’a prayers seeking salvation of the departed souls of those killed by the law enforcers and ruling party men.

 

In the capital, Fakhrul said the gayebana janaza will be held in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office at 4:30pm.
