Miscreants attacked 11 houses belonging to Shoulapara Union Parishad chairman Abdul Mannan Khan Bhasani and his supporters in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila Friday night.
Some of the houses were vandalised and burnt and the miscreants also looted gold ornaments and cash, witnesses said, adding that several hand bombs explosion occurred during the attack.
Meanwhile, the police arrested four people during a raid and recovered five hand-bombs.
Supporters of Abdul Mannan alleged that the attack was carried out on the orders of Helal Akon, former president of the district Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal.
On January 17, Abdul Mannan, along with his supporter,s joined the BNP, according to the local people.
Since then, there has been a dispute between the supporters of former Juba Dal leader Helal Akon and Abdul Mannan, local residents claimed.
Denying the allegation, Helal Akon said that the incident might have occurred due to dispute between Shoulapara Union BNP president and general secretary Mamun.
‘I am not involved with this incident at all. I came to Gopalganj because my relative died,’ he added.
Palong police station officer-in-charge Shah Alam said that it was initially reported that the attack occurred due to an internal conflict between Mannan and Helal Akon.
The police, however, were investigating the incident, he said, adding that no one has filed a written complaint yet.
