Health and Family Planning Minister Mohammad Nasim on Monday told Parliament that a total of 11 doctors were terminated while punitive actions were taken against over 100 others due to their negligence of duty in the last five months.
The minister provided the information in his statement under rule 300 of the rules of procedure, as Rustom Ali Farazi MP in his speech in the House on Sunday alleged that the health minister failed to maintain doctors in the remote hospitals.
“In the last five months, after taking over the charge (of the ministry), 11 doctors were sacked for dodging their duty, while salaries of 25 others were kept on hold, and 18 others were suspended. Besides, departmental cases were filed against 81 doctors,” Nasim said.
Nasim said hardly any doctors have been transferred after he took charge of the ministry. Only a small number were transferred, as punishment.
He said some 650 doctors are now working in various upazila hospitals across the country. “The doctors must stay in districts and upazilas for three years after getting appointment. Those who stay there, they’ll be transferred to good locations later.”
The health minister said appointment of 6521 more doctors is now under process, as they’ve already qualified the BCS examinations.
“Once new doctors are appointed after completion of police verification, the crisis of doctors will go within one or two months,” he added.
Nasim called on the Finance Minister to increase budgetary allocation for the health sector.
The Minister also sought the assistance of the Finance Minister in making the sector a role model.
He said the doctors at the government hospitals work under huge pressure, usually visiting 100/200 patients daily.
