The United States has reiterated its call for the major political parties of Bangladesh to work together to ensure a free, fair and credible general election.
“We have repeatedly urged the leaders of the major parties in Bangladesh to come together and agree on a way forward that will ensure free, fair, and credible elections in the coming months,” a spokesperson of US State Department said Tuesday.
In reply to a question, the office of the spokesperson in Washington DC said: “What the way forward looks like is for the parties of Bangladesh to decide; however, non-violence is essential to any solution.”
On the US Secretary of State John Kerry’s letters to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, the spokesperson said Kerry wrote the letters, encouraging them to engage in constructive dialogue on a way forward.
Kerry sent the letters to the ruling Awami League and the opposition BNP chiefs on Monday, two weeks after the UN chief’s phone calls, urging Hasina and Khaleda to resolve the crisis through talks.
