A BNP activists was shot dead and 50 people were injured in clashes among police, Awami League and BNP activists in Sarishabari upazila of the district Tuesday morning.
The deceased Belal Hossain was a Jubo Dal activist.
UNB adds: Witnesses said when some BNP men, led by district unit BNP president Faridul Kabir Talukder Shamim, were going to Muktijoddha Command Complex to place wreath at martyrs’ memorial police obstructed them in Truck stand area at about 8 am.
As the BNP men tried to go there ignoring police obstruction local Awami League activists also obstructed them, triggering a clash. A chase and counter-chase took place and they hurled brickbats at each other.
The rival groups also exchanged gunfire during the clash that left Belal dead on the spot.
Police fired 50 rounds of rubber bullet and lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
The injured took treatment at local clinics.
