Voting in Tangail by-polls ends

Voting for the by-election to Tangail-8 (Basail-Sakhipur) constituency ended peacefully  Saturday.

 

The polling began at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm without any break.

 

Five candidates are contesting the by-election to the parliamentary constituency.

 

The MPs candidates are Shawkat Momen’s son Anupam Shahjahan of the ruling Awami League, Sadek Siddiqui of JP (Manju) and independent Abdul Malek (AL rebel) and Principal Abu Sayeed (AL rebel) and Liaqat Ali.

 

The constituency has a total of 307,382 voters, including 145,576 men and 161,806 women, and they can exercise their franchise at 711 booths of 117 polling stations in the by-election.

 

Of them, 119,077 voters are under 49 polling stations in Basail upazila that comprised of a municipality and six union parishads, and 188,305 voters under 68 polling stations in Sakhipur upazila that comprised of a municipality and eight union parishads.

 

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of AL MP Shawkat Momen Shajahan on January 20.

 

On February 13, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the by-election.
