Chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on Tuesday decided to provide the money from government funds.

The projects include one entailing Tk 1.75 billion to build flood shelter centres (2nd phase) in areas prone to floods and river erosion.

A total of 156 shelter homes will be constructed under the project to be implemented by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.

It will cover 154 Upazilas of 43 districts in six divisions barring the Barisal Division.

There are a total of 2,487 cyclone shelters and 150 flood shelters in Bangladesh, far fewer than the need.

The newly constructed shelters will be used as educational institutions during other times.

Another amendment to the ‘setting up of 620 MG peaking power plant’ project was also approved. The amended project will cost Tk 61.23 billion which is around 12 percent less than the previous plan.

Planning Secretary Bhuiyan Shafiqul Islam told journalists about the decisions.

He said the nine projects will cost around Tk 67.2 billion and the government will meet the cost from its own funds.
