Tax fair collects Tk 8 bln

The government has collected around Tk 8 billion in taxes from across Bangladesh in the six days of the week-long Income Tax Fair 2013.

People thronged Dhaka’s Officers’ Club to pay their taxes braving gridlocks on Saturday.

A total of 89,783 people across the country had received taxation services on the day.

A media statement from the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said around Tk 8 billion have been realised from the fair until Saturday.

On the day, 23,229 income tax returns were submitted from which over Tk 1.08 billion have been realised.

The statement said a total of 407,150 persons had received services until Saturday. Of them, 10,058 have registered as new tax payers while 57,390 have re-registered under the newly introduced Electronic Tax Identification Number (ETIN).

NBR Chairman Ghulam Hussain told bdnews24.com a large number of taxpayers had attended the countrywide fair even braving general strikes.

“This proves the tendency of paying taxes have increased among the people,” he told bdnews24.com.

He hoped this year the tax collection would cross the targeted Tk 10 billion.

The tax fair will end on Sunday.

Last year, the fair was organised in 16 districts in which 97,000 people paid around Tk 8.38 billion in income taxes.
