‘Take concrete step for talks’

Government should take rapid steps to hold dialogue with all political parties

British High Commissioner Robert Gibson has urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to take concrete steps towards engaging in dialogue.

The British envoy made the statement after attending a meeting with Communication Minister Obaidul Quader at Setu Bhabanon Tuesday.

“The statements of the chiefs of two major political parties after the election seem that they are interested in dialogue,” said Robert Gibson.

He urged the government to take rapid steps towards holding dialogue with all political parties and ensure everyone’s voting rights.

Communication Minister Obaidul Quader said they have talked about the current political situation of the country.

“I have informed the British High Commissioner that it is difficult to reach national consensus in an environment of violence,” Obaidul told the reporters.

He added: “A space is necessary for holding dialogue. The government has created the space however Khaleda Zia’s comments on the ‘joint forces drive in Satkhira’ and ‘attacks on minority’ are likely to render it useless.”
