Tutor stabs JSC candidate after rape attempt

A schoolgirl’s father was found dead at Manikganj and an apparel worker succumbed to her injuries at a Savar hospital Thursday, both victims of stalkers.
In Sylhet, a private tutor stabbed a junior school certificate examinee Thursday afternoon after his failed attempt to rape her.
Billal Hossain, 40, of Kakrol, Shibalay, Manikganj was found dead following threats he received from the stalker of his daughter a class ten student.
Apparel worker Kalpana Begum, 24, wife of Abdur Razzak of Hemayetpur Natunpara, Savar, in the outskirts of the capital was stabbed by stalker for rejecting his overtures. She was admitted to Enam Hospital where she died Thursday.
The latest incidents of attacks by stalkers took place amid continuing protests against crimes against girls, women, their next of kin as well as protesters.
Since August 24, three school girls, a female apparel worker, a school girl’s father were killed by stalkers and five other school and college girls were left injured in stalking attacks.
The number of victims of stalking attacks rose to 10 in two months and 11 days since then.
Atn Savar, Kalpana was critically injured as 30-year old Sirajul Islam Lentu hacked her after she left her residence at Hemayetpur Natunpara on way to her workplace Wednesday afternoon as she protested against stalking her, police and locals said.
They said that the locals rescued blood-stained Kalpana and took her to Enam Medical College Hospital at Savar where she succumbed to her injuries Thursday noon.
They caught Sirajul from the spot and handed him over to the police after a
good beating.
Later, the stalker was also admitted to the same hospital in a critical condition, said police said.
Kalpana’s husband Abdur Razzak said that she was a skilled worker at the factory of Apparel-4.
He said that Siraj, a day labour, stalked his wife from time to time despite her protests.
Savar police station officer-in-charge SM Kamruzzaman told New Age that no case was recorded against the stalker until Thursday evening.
The OC said that the stalker appeared to be is mentally imbalanced.
New Age correspondent in Manikganj reported that the police recovered the body of Billal Hossain from beneath a bridge in the village Machain, Harirampur in Manikganj district Thursday morning.
Locals informed the police that the body of Billal, a tailor was floating on water beneath the Machain Bridge, said of Harirampur police station officer in charge Nazrul Islam.
He said that police rushed the spot and recovered the body at around 8AM.
The OC said that Billal was hacked to death some time between 10 PM Wednesday and early morning of Thursday near the bridge and his body was dumped into the water beneath the bridge.
Quoting the victim’s family members, the OC said that Sumon Mia, 22, son of their neighbor Ekhlas Matbar, used to stalk Billal’s daughter on her way to and from school and.
Billal informed Sumon’s parents several times about his aggressive conduct and requested them to control their son, said the OC.
Sumon’s father, instead of controlling his son, gave the proposal to Billal to arrange his daughter’s marriage with Sumon, the OC said.
He said that as Billal rejected the proposal, Sumon became angry and warned that Billal’s family would have to face dire consequences.
‘The victim’s family alleged that Sumon and his associates killed Billal,’ said the OC.
The OC said that Sumon and all the members of his family had fled.
The police launched a hunt to get Sumon and his family members arrested.
The latest attacks by stalkers highlight the persistence of the deadly social menace.
Stalkers killed at least 75 girls, women and protesters in last five years, according to rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra.
Unable to stand insults from stalkers, at least 90 other girls and women committed suicide during the period, shows ASK records.
The number of victims of stalking would be much higher if all such incidents were reported, said rights activists.
New Age staff Correspondent in Sylhet reported that Mokter Hossain, 30, son of Rahmat Ali of Teliuri village under Jaintapur upazila in the district stabbed a class VIII schoolgirl when his attempt to to rape her failed.
Neighbours caught him as her tried to flee and handed him over to the police, the police said.
They sent the victim, a student of Central Jainta High School, to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital after rescuing her, said neighbours.
Mokter stabbed her at Darbast Bazar at around 2.30 PM when she was returning home from the JSC examination centre, union parishad member Jalal said.
Jaintapur police station officer-in-charge Shafiul Kabir confirmed the incident.
