Six members of a family were infected with Covid-19 in the Sabujbagh area in Dhaka.

The family includes an elderly couple, their two daughters and two granddaughters — one two-and-half years old and the other only six months old, said Mahbub Alam, officer-in-charge of Sabujbagh Police Station.

The six are among the 88 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the country, said an official of IEDCR.

Of the family, the 65-year old man — caretaker of a four storey building in Nandipara — was found Covid-19 positive a day before yesterday followed by his wife. They were being treated at Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital, the OC said.

“Later samples of other family members were collected. Today, we came to know that they all tested positive,” the OC said.

The family lives on the second floor the building. The daughters and the two children were staying there, said the OC adding a neighbour of them was also found Covid-19 positive.

Following the detection, local police put nine nearby buildings under lockdown to contain spread of the coronavirus.

Residents of the building are allowed to go outside only in case of emergency.

It could not be known immediately how the first member of the family to contract the virus got infected, police said.
