SC calls for concise statement on Ghulam Azam appeal by Nov 5

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the prosecution and the defense to submit concise statement by November 5 on the appeals against the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 verdict sentencing nonagenarian Jamaat ameer Ghulam Azam to 90 years in jail unto death for his crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The five-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice M Muzammel Hossain passed the order.

On July 15 this year, ICT-1 sentenced the former Jamaat chief to 90 years’ imprisonment for masterminding crimes against humanity, genocide, and other wartime offences.

On August 5, Ghulam Azam filed an appeal with the SC seeking acquittal from the charges brought against him.

The government also lodged an appeal with the apex court seeking capital punishment for Ghulam Azam.
