The students and teachers of Rajshahi University staged demonstration and formed human chain on the campus demanding immediate arrest and punishment for the killers of Prof Shafiul Islam who was hacked to death on his way home on Saturday afternoon.
A strike called by the Rajshahi University Teachers Association is underway on the campus for the second consecutive day. No classes and no examinations were held.
More than a hundred teachers of the university wearing black badges formed a human chain under the banner of ‘Progressive Teachers Society’ in front of the senate building on the campus at around 10:00am.
Later, around at 11:00 am, the teachers and students of the sociology department brought out a mourning procession which paraded the main streets of the campus and joined the human chain on the Paris Road of the varsity. RU Teachers Association president and general secretary Kamrul Hasan Majumdar and Pranab Kumar Panday expressed solidarity with the human chain.
RU Kendrio Sangskritik Jote, a cultural organization, played remonstration songs in front of the university central library at 11:00am.
Bangldesh Chhatra League of RU unit also staged demonstration blocking the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway before the main entrance to the varsity at around 12:00 noon. Later, they brought out a procession on the highway that ended at Kazla gate of the university.
Meanwhile, the law enforcers in their night-long drives in Rajshahi city and adjacent areas of the university detained more about 30 people to investigate into the killing of Professor Shafiul, said Motihar police officer in charge Alamgir Hossain. Earlier, till Sunday evening, police and detective branch had detained about 20 people over the homicide.
On Sunday evening, RU registrar Professor Entajul Haque filed a murder case without citing any names with the Motihar police station, said OC Alamgir adding that none has been shown arrested in the case till Monday noon.
Meanwhile, teachers and students of Barisal University and Comilla University formed a human chain in their respective campus on Monday demanding the immediate arrest and speedy trial of Shafiul’s killer.
On Saturday, a gang of unidentified miscreants hacked Prof Shafiul to death with machetes at the entrance to his residence in Chauddapai, close to the university campus around 3:00pm, leaving him fatally injured. Later, in afternoon he was declared dead after surgery at Rajshahi Medical
College and Hospital.
