A Dhaka court on Sunday placed four garment owners, whose factories were on different floors of Rana Plaza, on a four-day remand each in a case filed for the deaths of 1,129 garment workers.
The deaths took place when nine-storey Rana Plaza came crashing down on April 24 trapping inside several thousands garment workers.
The garment owners are: Anisur Rahman, chairman of Ether Tex; Aminul Islam, chairman of Phantom Apparels Ltd and Phantom Tack Ltd; Bazlus Samad Adnan, chairman of New Wave Buttons; and its managing director Mahbubur Rahman Tapash.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Taibul Hasan -passed the remand order after the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) police filed separate petitions before the court seeking seven-day remand for each.
Bijoy Krisna Kar, assistant superintendent of police of CID told the court that they need to take the four owners on remand for further investigation of the case.
The accused were earlier placed for different terms of remand in connection with two cases filed after the collapse at Savar, on the outskirt of the capital.
Samad, Aminul and Tapash were arrested on April 27 while Anisur on April 28.
TWO CASES
Wali Ashraf, a sub-inspector of Savar Police Station, filed a case against Sohel Rana, owner of the building, his father Abdul Khalek and the owners of the five garments housed in the building for loss of lives and damages.
Helaluddin, an authorised officer of Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk), filed a case for the structural fault found at the building and constructing the structure using substandard materials and violating building code.
