Professionals meet Khaleda

In the wake of senior opposition leaders’ arrest and deployment of additional police around her residence, various professionals, including teachers, doctors, lawyers and journalists, met BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday night.

A delegation of University Teachers’ Association of Bangladesh (UTAB), a pro-BNP teachers’ platform, first met BNP chairperson at her Gulshan residence and voiced their concern over the country’s current political situation.

Amid BNP’s allegation that the government has imposed a restriction on entering the opposition leader’s residence, the eight-member UTAB delegation, led by its president AFM Yusuf Haider, entered it around 9:15pm had an-hour meeting with her.

Talking to reporters in front of the BNP chief’s residence after the meeting, Yousuf Haider said they discussed with the opposition leader the country’s overall situation and conveyed her about university teachers’ concern over the current political situation.

“We think a free, fair and acceptable election must be held with the participation of all political parties for keeping the country’s democratic process uninterrupted. “In this regard, we expressed to the opposition leader our solidarity with her party’s ongoing movement,” he told the journalists.

The UTAB president said they hoped that a free and fair election will be held under a non-party government following a meaningful dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties.

Referring to the arrest of senior BNP leaders, Yusuf Haider said, “This is unfortunate… we think it’ll spoil the dialogue atmosphere to some extent.”

After the teachers, some film actors and directors, led by noted film director Chashi Nazrul Islam, met Khaleda followed by another delegation of pro-BNP doctors’ forum DAB.

Later, some leaders of pro-BNP lawyers’ forum and journalist leaders also met her.

The journalist leaders include BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, Press Club president Kamaluddin Sabuj, general secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed, DUJ president Abdul High Shikder and DRU general secretary Ilias Khan.
