The police foiled an attempt to lay siege to Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s house at Gulshan in the city by Muktijoddha Sangsad Santan Command, a platform of children of freedom fighters.
The organisation backed by the ruling Awami League tried to lay siege to Khaleda’s house protesting at her comment over the number of martyrs of the Liberation War.
Khaleda recently at programme said that there was controversy over the number of Liberation War martyrs.
About 200 leaders and activists of the organisation marched towards Khaleda’s house and were stopped at Gulshan-2 intersection at about 9:00am.
Gulshan police division additional deputy commissioner Abdul Ahad told the protesters that such programme in a diplomatic area was prohibited.
The protesters then moved to Banani ground where they were chanting slogans against the BNP chief.
They later ended the programme and demanded Khaleda’s trial on charge of making ‘demeaning comments’ on Liberation War.
They also demanded that a law against distortion of history of Liberation War be enacted and diplomatic tie with Pakistan be severed.
Attending the programme, International Crimes Tribunal prosecutor Turin Afroz said, ‘Khaleda talks like the way Pakistan do to prove that they have not commited war crimes in 1971.’
Suchinta Foundation chairman Mohammad A Arafat said Khaleda had no right to live in Bangladesh as she was doing ‘Pakistani politics.’
Martyred intellectual Alim Chowdhury’s daughter Nuzhat Chowdhury said that the government should enact a law against creating any controversy over the Liberation War.
