Opposition parties demand judicial probe Claim thousands killed in joint drive

Leaders of the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) and Bangladesh Krishok Sramik Janata League (BKSJL) have demanded a judicial probe to ascertain how many people were killed in Monday’s crackdown on Hefajat-e Islam rally.

Asking for a quick inquiry, the political parties demanded that the report should be made public in three days.

The demand came minutes before a gayebana janaza Tuesday afternoon arranged in front of BNP headquarters in the capital for those who died when security forces clamped on thousands of people who joined a Hefajat-organised rally at Shapla Chattar.

BDB leader AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka and BKSJL chief Quader Siddiqui alleged on Tuesday that “thousands of Muslims had been killed brutally” in the dark hours of night “keeping the media away” from the scene.
