Two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have invented a method to purify seawater using local technology.

Salty water can be made drinkable through the low-cost technology, said its inventors.

The two innovators are Rezaul Karim Shaon and Sefayet Hossain Sourav of the university’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

The two SUST students invented the technology after conducting research under the supervision of their teacher Prof Dr M Towhidur Rahman.

Shaon told reporters that their technology to purify the seawater at a low cost is the first of its kind in Bangladesh.

Asked about the purpose of their research, he said they conducted the research to find out ways for neutralising salty water due to rapid fall in aquifer.

Shaon also said water purification plant can be set up at a cost of only Tk 4,000 using their method.
