Nine Bangladeshis to land in Mexican jail

Nine Bangladeshis, recently arrested in Mexico, will land in Mexican jail for 15 days for their illegal entry into the North American country.

An official release issued by Bangladesh Foreign Ministry on Friday said the number of Bangladesh nationals who were arrested on July 24 are not 10 but nine.

It said the Mexican authorities provided the particulars of the arrestees.

According to the release, the Mexican immigration authorities will allow Bangladesh Embassy extend consular access to them for verifying their nationality. Upon verification, the Mission will issue Travel Permits to them for their safe repatriation to Bangladesh.

The Mexican immigration authorities assured Bangladesh Embassy of treating them well and providing them with healthcare facilities, if needed.

Earlier, officers at the Bangladesh Embassy in Mexico city had a meeting with the senior officers of Mexican immigration on July 25.

Mexico detained 94 illegal immigrants, including nine Bangladeshis, packed into a truck bound for the US border, authorities said on Tuesday.

Apprehensions of Asians immigrating illegally to the United States have increased sharply in recent years, according to the US Department of Homeland Security.

Authorities said the migrants were traveling in inhumane conditions. The driver of the vehicle, who was from central Mexico, was arrested on human trafficking charges.

Between 2007 and 2011, the number of Indian nationals apprehended by US authorities jumped from less than 1,000 annually to nearly 4,000.

The numbers of Bangladeshi, Nepalese and Sri Lankan migrants detained have also increased.
