Nahid backs separate pay scale for teachers

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid endorsed a demand for a separate pay scale for teachers by sending letters in this regard to top government officials.
‘The education minister has sent separate demi official letters to the secretary of the President office, principal secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, cabinet secretary, senior secretary of public administration and finance ministry,’ said Subodh Chandra Dhali, deputy secretary of the education ministry, on Sunday.
‘In the letter, the minister called for formation of separate pay scale for teachers, putting university teachers in the rightful place in the warrant of precedence,’ he said.
University teachers are taking part in a movement at present demanding that the pay of a senior university professor and a professor should be at par a senior secretary and secretary, the pay for associate and assistant professors and lecturers should be rationalised according to the professors’ grade, a separate pay scale for teachers, benefits enjoyed by a government official of the same grade should be accorded to teachers, and proper place in the warrant of precedence for teachers.
A group of teachers under the leadership of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association president professor Farid Uddin Ahmed and general secretary professor ASM Maksud Kamal handed over a memorandum to the education minister with a four-point demand on June 15.
Subodh said the four-point demand of the university teachers was attached with the letters sent on Sunday.
