Local govt polls to become partisan

The cabinet Monday decided to amend five acts regarding local governments to allow political parties to place candidates in all elections to local government bodies.
The cabinet in its regular meeting with prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair took the decision to amend the laws regarding local government bodies from union council to district council, municipality and city corporations incorporating provisions for candidature with tickets of political parties and allocating the polls symbols of the parties for the candidates, said cabinet secretary M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan following today’s cabinet meeting.
‘After the bill is passed, the local body elections will be held like the national elections. Political parties will nominate their candidates and they will contest the polls under party banners and symbols,’ Mosharraf said.
Besides, individuals could contest the local government polls as independent candidate.
The proposed changes in the acts for local governments would also empower the government to appoint administrator in the local governments in absence of elected heads.
Asked about chances of violence and anarchy during local polls because of involvement of political parties, local government and rural development minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain ruled out any such possibilities.
‘The polls to local government bodies would be more competitive and democratic by the latest move,’ he said.
