Liquor worth Tk4 crore seized in Chittagong

Around 43,000 bottles of different brands liquor and 37,000 cans of beer were seized, says Department of Narcotic Control (DNC) Superintendent Inspector Chowdhury Imrul Hasan

The law enforcers have seized huge amount of contraband liquor worth about Tk 4 crore from a warehouse in Chittagong city’s Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) area.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) and Department of Narcotic Control (DNC) in a joint drive seized the contraband on Saturday evening.

The detainees were Borhan Uddin, Soaib bin Jamal, Md Ismail, Jewel Rana, Khohon, Mizan and Abu Taleb, said RAB sources.

All the detainees were the staff of one H Kabir and Company who illegally stored the items, said DNC sources.

DNC Superintendent Inspector Chowdhury Imrul Hasan said acting on a tip-off DNC personnel seized a private car along with the liquor from Agrabad area of the port city and held the driver Mizan.

Based on Mizan’s confession, RAB and DNC personnel jointly conducted drive at the warehouse of H Kabir and Company at KEPZ area and held others while they were uploading the contraband into another private car.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mobassher Hossain of RAB-7 said the company illegally used to store the huge contraband liquor and supplied it to different parts of the city without DNC’s permission.

Around 43,000 bottles of different brands liquor and 37,000 cans of beer were seized worth Tk3.96 crore in an initial count, said Chowdhury Imrul Hasan.

The company had no license to sell the contraband while the liquor was stored in the warehouse without the permission of DNC, added the officials.

Legislative process against the detainees was under process till filing of this report at 8:35pm.
