Legality of duty-free car import by MPs challenged

A writ petition was filed with the High Court on Monday challenging the legality of duty-free import of cars by parliament members.

Lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ petition with the HC in the morning.

The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain will hear the petition on Tuesday.

The petition sought a rule asking why the provision of duty-free car import for MP’s should not be declared illegal.

Secretaries of the ministries of Finance, Communication, Cabinet and the chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) have been made respondents to the rule.

The petition also sought a stay on the import of duty-free cars until the writ is resolved.

The petitioner mentioned in the writ that MPs will get some facilities as per the article 68 of the constitution where nothing has been mentioned about duty-free car import for MPs. So, duty-free car import by MP’s is contradictory to the constitution.
