Khaleda in militant mood to resist polls: Hanif

Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Thursday alleged that opposition leader Khaleda Zia has now appeared in a militant mood to resist the next parliamentary polls.

“The next general election will be held in due time like other democratic countries in the world. But the opposition leader has emerged with a militant mood to resist the polls,” he said while addressing a demonstration organised by Jubo League Dhaka city unit (North) in front of Tajgaon College in the city.

Hanif, also a special assistant to the Minister Sheikh Hasina, however, said BNP has no power to resist the election.

Coming down heavily on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for unleashing terrorist activities across the country, he said. “It seems from their terrorist activities that it’s not a political party… it’s a fascist organisation.”

The Awami League leader also said following the court order declaring illegal the registration of Jamaat, the party is no longer a political party. “It’s a terrorist organisation. They’ll be resisted in the future politically as well as from the government’s side.”

Claiming the ongoing 48-hour hartal enforced by Jamaat is causing untold sufferings to Hajj pilgrims, he said, “Many pilgrims failed to get their flights yesterday (Wednesday) and today (Thursday) due to the hartal. But it’s an irony of fate that the party is doing politics in the name of Islam.”

Jubo League chairman Omar Faruk Chowdhury and general secretary Harun-or-Rashid, among others, addressed the rally held with Dhaka city unit (North) president Mainul Hossain Khan in the chair.
