Jhantu leads Rangpur City Polls

Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhontu, a member of district Awami League Advisory Committee, is leading the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) mayoral elections on Thursday.

According to unofficial results, Jhantu bagged 96,127 votes, while his nearest rival Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa, expelled from Jatiya party, secured 67,325 votes in 159 polling centres out of a total of 178.

The maiden election to the RCC ended peacefully in the afternoon.

Around 75 to 80 percent votes were cast till 4:00pm, said Monirul Islam, returning officer of the RCC election.

The voters who were waiting in queues within the polling centres will be allowed to cast their votes at the closing time of the polls, said the returning officer.
