Jatiya Party will join the 14-party alliance for the upcoming general election.

Awami League Secretary General Obaidul Quader told reporters after a dialogue between JaPa and the ruling alliance at Ganabhaban on Monday night that the parties had reached a consensus at the dialogue.

“The election will be held within the scope of the constitution and the law. Jatiya Party, like the 14-party alliance, agrees on this,” he said.

“Jatiya Party will be allied with 14-party in the upcoming election and will form the government together,” he added.

He said there had been no talk of seat distribution at the dialogue.

“The 14-party alliance has not discussed these matters either. We will hold meetings on a smaller scale later to decide on these things,” Quader added.

Jatiya Party Co-Chairman GM Quader said this was an informal election discussion and formal talks will be held later.

“The JaPa-led alliance is preparing a list of candidates for the 300 constituencies,” he said.

“JaPa wants a free, fair and participatory election within the bounds of the constitution,” he added.

Awami League advisory council member Tofail Ahmed said: “Ershad has said he has confidence on the prime minister. JaPa had no proposals at the dialogue.”

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad spoke briefly to reporters before leaving Ganabhaban, saying he came to Ganabhaban to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which was a successful meeting.
