Hasina conspiring to retain power skipping polls: BNP

BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam on Thursday alleged that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is trying to retain power skipping the polls.

“Hasina knows it very well that her government won’t be able to win the national election. So, she’s trying to stay away from the election,” he said.

Addressing a party workers’ meeting at a city hotel, he also urged BNP leaders and activists to forge a steel-like strong unity to oust this fascist regime and establish people’s voting rights.

The BNP leader observed that Bangladesh is now passing through a critical juncture due to misrule and undemocratic attitude of the Awami League-led government.

“The ruling party men are engaging in intra party clashes, but shifting the blame onto us. They’re looting public money from all financial institutions. The same situation is prevailing like that of post-independence period when the Awami League men had been on looting spree,” he said.

He went on: “We’re living in a strange country. Elias Ali has been made disappeared. Journalist couple Sagor-Runi has been killed. Innumerable persons also have remained missing. Similar situation prevailed in the country during 1972-75 when 32,000 progressive political activists had been killed.”

Tariqul alleged that the government politicised every democratic institution of the country by appointing its diehard party men.

BNP joint secretary general BNP Mizanur Rahman Minu and BNP chairperson’s adviser and former MP Nurul Islam Dadu Bhai, among others, spoke at the meeting held with city unit BNP president Nazrul Islam Monzu in the chair.
