Govt created Afghanistan-like situation: BNP

It says govt’s dream of holding unilateral polls to be dashed

Opposition BNP on Thursday alleged that the government has created a volatile situation like Afghanistan in the country by resorting to repressive acts and imposing a ban on political activities.

“The opposition’s constitutional and democratic rights have been snatched. The government troopers are killing the activists of democratic movement on the streets through firings like rain,” said BNP joint secretary Salauddin Ahmed.

In a statement sent from an undisclosed place, he also said, “This illegal regime has created an Afghanistan-like situation in the country.”

Calling upon the government to sit for negotiations, Salauddin said they still hope that the government would follow the path of peace by accepting the non-party caretaker government demand and cancelling the election schedule.

He also warned that they will realise their demand through the street movement together with people, dashing the government’s dream of holding a lopsided election.

Justifying his announcement of the party’s programmes through video messages, Salauddin said, “The Prime Minister said we’re carrying out the movement announcing programmes through video messages. The PM showed vanity snatching all constitutional and fundamental rights, including the rights of holding meetings, rallies and processions and freedom of speech.”

He said they are forced to announce political programmes through video message as the government sized their constitutional and democratic rights. “The fascist regime has not left any safe place where the party’s peaceful political programmes can be announced openly in a press conference.

The BNP joint secretary general said, “We’ve frequently said that if the way of movement in line with the Constitution and the democratic process are closed, it’ll encourage unsystematic extremism. As a result, there’s possibility for interruption of the democratic process. So, the fascist government will have to take responsibility, if any untoward situation emerges.”

He demanded the release of arrested senior BNP leaders, including its standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar, ASM Hannan Shah, Rafiqul Islam Miah, vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, BNP chairperson’s advisers Abdul Awal Mintoo and Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin, and joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi withdrawing all the ‘false’ cases filed against them.

About the last day of their 131-hour blockade programme, the BNP spokesman claimed an opposition activist was killed while more than 450 others were injured and 393 leaders and activists arrested across the country on Thursday.

Besides, over 2,100 opposition leaders and activists were implicated in ‘false’ cases, Salauddin further claimed.

He, on behalf of opposition leader Khaleda Zia, greeted the country’s people and leaders-activists of BNP and the 18-party alliance for observing the 131-hour blockade successfully with their spontaneous participation.
