Govt considers Khaleda’s arrest: says Inu

Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu on Saturday said the government is considering the arrest of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia as she, what he said, killed people enforcing hartals.

“Khaleda is creating violence by enforcing hartals and killing people. So, she can’t avoid the responsibility of killing people,” he said.

Inu came up with the remark while addressing a function organised by ‘Manabendra Narayan Larma celebration committee’ marking the 30th death anniversary of Manabendra Narayan Larma at Dhaka University.

Inu accused the BNP chief of conspiring to bring Jamaat-Shibir and Hefajat to power to unleash militancy in the country.

Addressing the function, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman termed the arrest of five central leaders of BNP as a violation of human rights and criticsed the government for it.

Earlier on Friday night, plainclothes police arrested BNP standing committee members Barrister Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, BNP Chairperson’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo and her special assistant Shimul Biswas in the city.

The NHRC boss said the government should avoid arresting someone without proper allegation. “Our political leaders are very much patriot but their patriotism is related to power.”

Urging the government to ensure the security of all people, Dr Mizan said, “It’s tantamount to violation of human rights if someone is arrested for backing the opposition politics.”

Actress Rokeya Prachi managing editor of Daily Samakal Abu Sayeed Khan and CPB Presidium member Shah Alam, among others, spoke on the occasion.
